Genetic regulation of neuronal health and mitochondrial biology
We are focusing on probing the mechanisms by which a healthy pool of mitochondria is maintained, particularly in neurons. This is important as mitochondrial dysfunction often leads to neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases. Key processes that are required to maintain a healthy pool of mitochondria often relate to their fusion and fission, which regulate their size, mitophagy to clear damaged mitochondria, and biogenesis to replenish their abundance. Currently we are focusing on two questions – 1) how do mitochondria sense their size and 2) how do mitochondria transmit stress signaling?
